Hon. Patrick Madden

Patrick Madden was born and raised in Long Beach. He comes from a family of lawyers. His father, Joe Madden, was a prominent lawyer in Long Beach and a former President of the Long Beach Bar. His older brother, Phil, also practiced law in Long Beach and was also a former President of the Long Beach Bar. His mother was active in community affairs and founded the St. Mary’s Hospital Guild. Pat graduated from St. Anthony’s High School. He then attended Long Beach City College and transferred to UCLA, where he graduated. He then served on active duty in the US Navy. After completion of active duty, he attended and graduated from the Gould School of Law at USC. His first job after graduation was as a research attorney in federal court for Judge Malcolm Lucas, then a United States District Judge and later the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court. He then accepted employment as an associate and later as a partner at the law firm of Ball, Hunt, Hart, Brown and Baerwitz, where he practiced for fifteen years. As a young associate at Ball, Hunt, he was fortunate to work on the Watergate related case of People v. John Erlichman, the former Counsel and Assistant to President Nixon, and the case of People v. Roman Polanski. Later he formed his own law firm, Cameron, Madden, Pearlson & Gale. As an attorney, he primarily handled civil litigation matters. In 1998, Governor Pete Wilson appointed Pat to the Municipal Court and in 2000, he was elevated to the Superior Court. His current assignment is to preside over civil jury trials in the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach.
As an attorney, Pat served as president of the Long Beach Barristers and has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Long Beach Bar Association. In addition, he was president of the California Young Lawyers Association and served on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California. He has served on numerous committees of the State Bar and the American Bar Association. While a young attorney, Pat served on the board of Long Beach Legal Aid Foundation. For many years he served as a board member and president of ChildNet Youth and Family Services. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Long Beach.
Pat is married to Lillian, who is a Senior Deputy County Counsel for the County of Los Angeles.
They have a daughter, Sarah. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, fishing and bike riding with his
family and reading.
